Despite Recommendations From Local Law Enforcement, Administration to Defund “Sanctuary Cities”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 27, 2017 – Voto Latino, the leading civic media organization empowering American Latino millennials, released a statement from President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar following Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement this afternoon that the Administration will prohibit “sanctuary cities” and localities from receiving federal funding necessary to keeping communities safe.

“It seems that this Administration is intent on going against the recommendations of local law enforcement officials across the country who are adamant that their cities and communities are safer when every resident is able to trust the police.

“Voto Latino will continue to work with cities and localities, encouraging them to take a stand against the President’s deportation force, and commit to keeping families together and all their residents safe. As we know, ICE has already targeted communities who have committed to protecting their most vulnerable residents, and we can’t let this stand.

“Our college chapters across the country have already pushed their administrations to make their campuses safe to undocumented students and their families, and we encourage all college campuses to follow.

“Attorney General Sessions’ latest policy goes against the America we all believe in, one in which we are all able to live freely and continue contributing to the country we call home.”
