National Guard To Be Deployed to U.S. Border
Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced President Trump will sign a proclamation to deploy National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. The Administration has not provided key details regarding costs, where troops will be sent, or how long troops will be deployed.
Voto Latino President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:
“With his decision to mobilize the National Guard across the U.S. southern border, President Trump seeks to sensationalize a non-issue to advance a nativist agenda. It is clear the President continues to scapegoat border security issues due to his limited understanding of governance. Deploying the National Guard for border security purposes is inefficient and dangerous. Such a move will potentially destabilize our borders and upend trust with our neighbors. Critically, his actions purposefully divert attention away from other important issues facing our country including job creation, the opioid epidemic, and election security. Congress must do better to check and balance the executive branch and its grossly negligent policies that harm U.S. interests.”
