Senate Republicans Break Long Standing Rules, Go Nuclear to Confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch to Supreme Court
WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 6, 2017 – Voto Latino, the leading civic media organization empowering American Latino millennials, released a statement from President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar on Senate Republicans vote to change Senate rules to confirm President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court Nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch by a simple majority vote.
“Today, Senate Republicans decided that instead of encouraging President Trump to put forth a mainstream Supreme Court nominee that could garner bipartisan support, they’d instead break long standing Senate rules intended to keep the Supreme Court above politics, to push through Judge Gorsuch as the next Supreme Court Justice.
“Judge Gorsuch has a troubling far-right record whose rulings could affect communities of color for decades to come, and a troubling record of siding with corporations, the powerful and wealthy.
“We commend Senate Democrats for taking a principled stance against his nomination.
“Every Supreme Court justice in the last 125 years, with the exception of Justice Clarence Thomas, has received the support of three-fifths of the Senate, and that should be the ideal our Senators strive for.
“Make no mistake. Today’s decision to change historic rules to push the President’s agenda falls squarely on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, as will the consequences of changing a rule that encourages Senators from both parties to work together in fulfilling one of the Senate’s most critical functions.”
