Voto Latino: Congress Must Say No to Trump’s Anti-American Agenda

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 16, 2017 – Voto Latino, the leading civic media organization empowering American Latino millennials, released a statement from President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar on the White House’s $3 billion request to help fund Trump’s deportation force and border wall.

“Budgets represent a president’s values. This Republican president’s proposal to build a border wall fattens government contractors at the expense of struggling Americans. His priorities to militarize our towns and eliminate lifelines to the rural and urban poor, under the guise of keeping America safe, is cruel and inhumane.

“His budget slashes programs for the homeless and shutters airports in rural areas already suffering slow economic growth, while simultaneously gutting housing for the urban poor. It kills meals on wheels for 2.4 million senior citizens, legal aid, arts, health access, education, and environmental standards. Latinos who rely on these services will be severely impacted.

“This wall and deportation force goes against what the majority of Americans want. Exit polls showed that 54 percent of the electorate is against a wall, and 72 percent of Americans say undocumented immigrant in the U.S. should be allowed to stay. This funding is in no way a reflection of our country’s priorities.

“This budget exemplifies a Republican administration void of solutions and does not make America safer. On the contrary, it has the potential to compromise our safety, by making it near impossible for fellow Americans to be upwardly mobile. America is secure because of a thriving middle class. Americans already struggling will see their economic stability further weakened, and their children’s future stymied overnight, if Congress passes this proposal.”
