Voto Latino Statement on Texas Mass Shooting

Austin, TX — Today a gunman opened fire inside a small church in Southerland, Texas. At least 26 people have been killed, making this the deadliest shooting in Texas history. In response, Maria Teresa Kumar, Voto Latino President and CEO, issued the following response:

“As we closed our annual conference with nearly 500 participants and leaders in the heart of Texas, we were devastated to learn that yet another senseless and avoidable tragedy had struck our country. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of today’s mass shooting in Southerland Springs, just 80 miles away from us. We cannot allow this to become the new normal. America is suffering a gun violence epidemic. It is time to turn thoughts and prayers into action. We urge Congress to act now.”
