VP of Communications
The VP of Communications will be responsible for the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership. The VP of Communications will oversee both the traditional and social media communication activities. The VP of Communications will report to the Executive Director and will supervise a Communications Manager, Social Media Director and the Social Media Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a strategic communications plan in consultation with senior leadership and Managing Director to support the organization’s mission and objectives.
- Act as a senior leader who is able to drive a narrative through multiple avenues, including a principal who is on national television often multiple times in a week as well as organizational channels.
- Oversee and guide staff work on Traditional and Social Media content (i.e. press releases/statements, talking points, editorials, social media copy, online video, and marketing materials).
- Leverage existing relationships and cultivate new ones with relevant journalists, editorial boards, and other appropriate outlets to generate broader coverage of Voto Latino’s mission, programs and priorities.
- Maximize influencer opportunities by designing programming and opportunities to inspire celebrities, online influencers, and micro-influencers to register voters and elevate Latinx political power consistently across media.
- Identify strategic opportunities with media partners outside of traditional placement (television studios, media conglomerates, digital content producers) to do integrated programming and local coordination.
- Oversee development of press/information kits, news releases, news materials, and fact sheets on organizational programs and initiatives.
- Oversee development and management of all collateral communications materials, including annual reports, pamphlets, audio-visual presentations, etc.
- Train staff in communications best practices.
- Travel as needed, typically once per quarter or more.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university preferably in communications or journalism.
- 10+ years of state government relations/communications/public affairs/campaigns experience, in increasingly senior roles.
- Demonstrated experience managing staff, including nurturing creative storytellers in earned and social media.
- Extensive successful writing and editing experience with a variety of print and digital (e.g., newsletters, magazines, press releases, and annual reports) formats in English, with Spanish competency a plus.
- Extensive knowledge of options and opportunities to pitch/publicize the organization’s mission, programs, and reputation, incorporating fundraising messaging to the public and constituents.
- Consistent record of juggling multiple tasks/campaigns with varying and shifting deadlines.
- Ability to collaborate with other team members to integrate messaging across communications platforms.
- Demonstrated commitment to, and awareness of Latino civil rights and/or issues of social justice.
- Prior community advocacy or campaign experience is preferred.
Must be based or be willing to move to the Washington, DC area in the future, remote work currently during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Salary & Benefits
Between $100-$110k salary. Benefits include partial payment of medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums and 20 days of PTO.
