Voto Latino Sounds Alarm on Increasing Political Censorship
Washington, D.C. — Today, in response to ABC pulling Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show “indefinitely”, Voto Latino issued the following statement:
“The decision by ABC to pull Jimmy Kimmel’s show following his commentary is deeply concerning, and not normal. Silencing political critique, whether it comes from a journalist, an artist, or a comedian, undermines our constitutional rights and contradicts the very foundation of our democracy.
“The involvement of Administration officials in pressuring private media companies should be raising questions about the independence of our public dialogue. We should all be sounding the alarm on the extent to which the Administration is willing to silence dissent.
“The First Amendment of the Constitution protects freedom of speech. It also safeguards freedom of the press, the right to assemble, and the right to petition the government. More than ever, we must protect our speech rights to ensure that every voice can be heard in a free society and to strengthen our democracy.”
