Latest Muslim Ban Executive Order Same as the First: Xenophobic and Prejudiced

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 7, 2017 – Voto Latino, the leading civic media organization empowering American Latino millennials, released a statement from President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar on the Administration’s latest executive action on barring refugees from six majority-Muslim countries after his first executive action stalled after several federal courts blocked its implementation.

“The President’s latest Muslim ban comes only 12 days after the Department of Homeland Security concluded that none of these countries present a serious terrorism threat to the country,” said Kumar.

“The Republican Administration’s order that bans refugees from six Muslim-majority countries is rooted in the same fear and xenophobia as the one the President signed last month, and the latest tweaks don’t change its prejudiced intent.

“The major role of the commander and chief is to keep our country safe and countless international policy experts have expressed that these types of overreaching policies only foment insecurity by feeding a dangerous narrative that helps extremists recruit.

“We are better than this as Americans, and we call on the President to not turn our country’s back on the world’s most vulnerable, and to instead continue being a beacon of hope for those fleeing violence and persecution.”
