An Open Letter in Support of Judge Lina Hidalgo
Voto Latino applauds the courage and leadership of Judge Lina Hidalgo for her transparency and openness as she takes a leave of absence to focus on her mental health. Far too often, conversations surrounding mental health maintain an unwarranted stigma. Mental health is no different than physical health. We must recognize the importance of caring for ourselves to be the best leaders, advocates, and community members. Vocal leaders like Judge Hidalgo provide much-needed visibility and advocacy for mental wellness and support.
While our community faces various barriers to accessing mental health resources ranging from the cost of services to a lack of culturally competent practitioners, we will continue to advocate and amplify resources to help our community access mental healthcare. Voto Latino supports the passage of the Mental Health for Latinos Act introduced by Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Senator Alex Padilla of California, and Congresswoman Grace Napolitano of California. Together, legislative solutions can provide the resources to help our community save lives and combat the stigma and structural barriers around mental health access.
