BETRAYAL: SENATE REPUBLICANS CUT MEDICAID AND OTHER ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO PAY FOR TAX BREAKS FOR ULTRA-WEALTHY

Washington, D.C. — Today, the United States Senate voted on President Trump’s proposed budget bill –  a mega-spending bill that will result in major cuts to Medicaid and other essential programs, costs going up and tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. With the budget bill having cleared the Senate, Voto Latino President and Co-Founder Maria Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“From day one, Congressional Republicans have demonstrated their inability to govern, leading  to more chaos and division in the country. Voters, including some Latino voters, gave them an opportunity to prove their policies could improve lives, and voters were scammed.

“This disastrous and harmful mega spending bill will be detrimental to hardworking families, especially for every single Latino across the country. This bill aims to kick nearly 12 million people off Medicaid while allocating $45 billion to build for-profit detention centers, allowing private companies to profit even more. Something is clearly off—pouring billions into immigration detention while slashing the social safety net is a betrayal of our values.

“Rising costs of goods and deep cuts to Medicaid and essential programs like food stamps to give their ultra-wealthy donors even more tax breaks–these are the priorities Republicans are trying to force onto the American people. This isn’t what voters signed up for, and we will continue to remind our community, especially Latino voters in key congressional districts and swing states, of their dangerous policy priorities.”
