Court Ruling Reaffirms: Texans Deserve Fair Maps, Not Racial Gerrymandering Ahead of 2026

Washington, D.C. — Today, in response to a federal court blocking Texas from using the newly redrawn congressional maps, Voto Latino issued the following statement:

“Today’s ruling is a clear reminder that Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans’ mid-decade redistricting scheme was an unlawful and deliberate attempt to undermine fair representation. The court affirmed that these maps were created with a political intention of diluting the political power of Black and Latino voters. Throughout this process, state leaders spread misleading claims, attempting to frame this scheme as an effort to ‘protect the election system’ rather than to secure political advantage. These maps were never designed with the best interests of Texas voters in mind—they were designed to entrench power.

Texas is home to one of the fastest-growing and most diverse populations in the country, yet its political leadership repeatedly chooses to silence those very voters. Over 12 million Latino Texans and nearly 4 million Black Texans are already subjected to voter suppression in the state. As we look toward the 2026 midterm elections, our commitment remains unchanged. Voto Latino will continue to mobilize Texas voters and ensure they remember that, instead of addressing the real needs of Texans, Governor Abbott and Texas Republicans prioritized the demands of the president.

Texans deserve fair representation, not racially gerrymandered maps designed to silence the state’s majority. As we move forward, Voto Latino will double down on combating electoral disinformation, informing our community about their voting rights and how to protect them, and organizing to ensure every eligible Texan is registered and empowered to vote. Together, we will elect leaders who truly represent our values and understand the needs of our communities.”
