GOP’s Redistricting Plan Will Silence Texas’s Largest Demographic
Washington, D.C. — Today, Voto Latino denounced President Donald Trump and Texas Republicans’ efforts to redraw the state’s congressional maps mid-decade—a move intended to secure five additional GOP House seats at the expense of communities of color and their fundamental right to vote. Trump’s irregular request comes ahead of Governor Greg Abbott’s special legislative session to move forward his Republican-led redistricting agenda.
Voto Latino issued the following statement:
“This is not about ensuring fair representation—it’s about manipulating the system to seize political power from communities of color and cling to political control. With Latinos making up the largest and fastest growing demographic in Texas, our political representation and power will be diminished for generations to come if Trump and Texas Republicans get their way.
“This direct attempt to disenfranchise communities of color and restrict access to the ballot box is another example of their misplaced priorities. Texas families are still reeling from deadly floods. Instead of helping communities recover, political leaders are focused on rigging the state’s electorate.
“Redistricting should be about fairly representing the people of Texas—not protecting politicians from accountability. When elected officials redraw maps mid-cycle to entrench their own power, they erode public trust in our institutions and disrespect the very voters they were elected to serve.
“We will not allow our voices to be silenced. We will make ourselves heard at the ballot box—and we expect our representatives to do the same by standing with their constituents.”
Latinos make up 40.3% of the state’s population, making Latinos the state’s largest demographic. However, despite our growing political power, there remains a significant gap in voter participation. Of the total 6.5 million Latinos eligible to vote in Texas, only approximately 4.9 million are currently registered.
