Latino Voters Drive Historic Turnout in 2026 Texas Primary

Washington, D.C. —  Last night’s primary elections demonstrated an unprecedented engagement of Latino voters across the country. In response to the historic turnout in Texas, Voto Latino issued the following statement:

“Latinos are no longer a ‘silent majority,’ they are the key deciding voting bloc of American elections. Latino voters helped shape the crucial results in Texas, fueling dominant victories and signaling a massive shift in engagement compared to the 2022 midterm cycle.

The data shows the Latino community is paying attention, engaged and eager to exercise their right to vote. Enthusiasm was high with 68.9% of Latino voters casting their ballots during the early voting period. This isn’t just participation; Latinos know the country is heading in the wrong direction and are  demanding change. In majority-Latino counties, 460,438 voted in the Democratic primary, a 149% increase from the 2022 primary. More than 19 Latino candidates secured party nominations last night, reflecting a growing demand for Latino representation. However, the results also sent a clear message: Latino loyalty is not guaranteed.

Latinos are coming home to Democrats—there is no question about it—and they will be key to flipping the House and making inroads on the Senate battlefield map. But there is still a lot of work to be done. With the affordability crisis and the economy struggling, along with Republicans’ chaotic and cruel immigration policies, this is a prime opportunity for Democrats to put forward candidates who speak to these issues and are willing to invest the time and infrastructure needed to ensure that message reaches the community.

Voto Latino understands this shift well and has invested heavily in the next generation of leadership through our VL On-Campus network that spans across 138 campuses nationwide. By meeting Texas student leaders where they are and providing the tools to activate their own communities, we’ve empowered 18 different college campuses to lead their own movements. This organic, easy-lift approach is exactly how we turned record registration into record turnout last night.

This primary is just a preview: Voto Latino will double-down on its efforts to inform, mobilize, and empower Latino voters so they can elect leaders who represent their values and will fight for them.”

The victories we saw yesterday, including James Talarico’s win in Texas, speak to a reality we see every day: people are fed up with the direction the country is heading. Working Latino families are tired of the cost, cruelty, and chaos. With grocery prices soaring and a significantly higher unemployment rate than the rest of the nation, our community is facing impossible daily choices.

Talarico’s path to victory ran directly through Texas’ Latino-majority counties, where he posted commanding margins:

  • El Paso County (82% Latino): +26 points
  • Starr County (97% Latino): +32.5 points
  • Hidalgo County (92% Latino): +36.3 points
  • Cameron County (89% Latino): +28.5 points

During the 2024 cycle, promises were made to Latino voters that have yet to materialize. Behind the statistics are families skipping meals or taking on third jobs just to cover rent. Last night made clear that the ‘Latino Wave’ of 2026 is being felt loud and clear. As we head toward November, the uncertainty of the economic climate and the threat of silenced voices will only further activate this community to demand better.
