President Trump Has Stripped Legal Protections from 870,000 Immigrants — Families Face Deportation After Years in U.S.

WASHINGTON. D.C. — President Trump is failing in his promise to protect Americans by targeting hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have undergone background checks and contributed to our economy, communities, and tax base. By rolling back Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 870,000 people, the administration is disrupting lives, families, and local economies across the nation.

Voto Latino is deeply concerned that this policy shift is driven more by a desire to generate headlines and meet a self-imposed political “quota” than by a genuine attempt to address immigration policy. This is not reform—it is reckless and inhumane. Revoking the legal protections of hardworking individuals misses the point entirely. This is careless and cruel—both in the short term and for our nation’s long-term wellbeing.

Since resuming office in January 2025, the Trump administration has aggressively moved to end TPS protections for immigrants from multiple countries who fled violence, authoritarianism, and humanitarian disasters. These individuals have built lives in the United States—starting small businesses, volunteering in their communities, paying taxes, and raising U.S. citizen children.

Countries Affected by TPS Terminations Since January 2025:

The U.S. immigration system is long overdue for modernization—one that reflects the reality of a diverse, multicultural America. But reform must be rooted in dignity and fairness—not in tearing away protections from those who have already made this country home. A modern immigration system isn’t built on mass rollbacks and deportations. It’s built on opportunity, safety, and respect for the people who contribute to the fabric of our nation.

Voto Latino urges Congress to take immediate legislative action to protect TPS recipients. We also call on communities across the nation to stand in solidarity with TPS holders and advocate for policies that reflect our nation’s values of compassion and inclusivity.
