SCOTUS Upholds DACA

Supreme Court resists Trump administration’s “arbitrary and capricious” decision to attack our nation’s DREAMers

Washington, DC – Today, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration cannot rip away protections for 650,000 DREAMers. Instead, undocumented people who came to the United States as children will get to keep their DACA status and continue to work, go to school, and live their lives in the only home they’ve ever known.

“DREAMers are Americans,” said María Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino. “They’re our friends, our neighbors, and our family. They’re the parents to hundreds of thousands of American-born children. They pay billions in taxes every year. As of today, they’ll be comforted knowing they’re able to maintain the legal protections they deserve. The fight does not end here, but we will celebrate this victory today.

I want to thank DREAMers themselves for their courage and belief in the justice system. Today they remind every single one of us that we are a nation of immigrants. That a social security number does not define allegiance to a flag but rather one’s relentless pursuit of justice regardless of origin keeps us true to our values as a nation.”

This decision won’t fix broader problems within our broken immigration system. But this is an important victory and a step towards a more comprehensive, just, and equitable immigration system that is true to our American identity.

Voto Latino stands in solidarity with DREAMers across the country as they continue to seek their rightful legal status. The next step in this fight is for concerned Americans across the country to register to vote, mobilize their communities and overwhelmingly vote Donald Trump out of office in November. That will be the greatest protection we can provide to our DREAMers.
