Supreme Court Rebukes Trump’s Tariff Overreach as Families Shoulder the Cost

Washington, D.C. — After the Supreme Court delivered a 6-3 decision ruling that President Trump had exceeded his authority with the implementation of tariffs on nearly every U.S. trading partner, Voto Latino issued the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision makes clear what Americans consumers, small business owners, lower- and middle-income households, and farmers across the nation have been telling us: Trump’s tariffs are unlawful and should have never been imposed. Yet, despite the clear call to end the deep economic harm these tariffs have caused to our communities, President Trump continues to peddle these harmful economic policies.

This is nothing more than a clear show of how out of touch Trump is to the financial hardships that everyday Americans face. For too long, the president has misrepresented the true cost of tariffs when, in reality, American families shoulder nearly 90% of those costs. From groceries and back-to-school essentials to electronics and everyday household items, American consumers are footing the bill for a failed economic policy.

Throughout the campaign trail, President Trump made economic promises that have yet to materialize. Today, 60% of American voters are cutting back on groceries, while 28% of voters are skipping meals to make ends meet. Those economic pressures are even more severe for Black and Latino voters, with housing costs being a leading source of stress for Latino families. The bottom line is that across the country, people feel that no matter how hard they work, they cannot get ahead—believing that the American Dream is no longer within reach.

Next week, we expect the president to repeat claims of a ‘booming economy’ during his State of the Union address, but that narrative does not align with what families are experiencing. Since returning to office, he has prioritized tax breaks and benefits for his billionaire allies while working families are left to make painful financial decisions.

We now urge Congress to put the American people first by blocking any further imposition of tariffs and advancing policies that lower costs and strengthen economic security for working families.”
