Supreme Court Upholds California’s New Congressional Map
Washington, D.C. — Today, the United States Supreme Court cleared the way for California to use its newly redrawn congressional map in this year’s midterm elections, allowing districts approved by voters under Proposition 50 to be implemented.
In response, Voto Latino issued the following statement:
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court not only upholds the will of the people of California, but also stands as clear proof of the power voters have to shape our democracy. Last year, Californians made their voices heard loud and clear when they turned out resoundingly in support of the new maps.
As Republicans deploy a nationwide gerrymandering machine to rig the midterm elections, the warning signs of backlash are unmistakable—voters across the country are rejecting the failed policies of this administration.
California has the largest Latino population in the country, with Latinos making up 28% of the electorate. Now, California can legally move forward with congressional districts that better represent its diversity. Latino voters will be able to elect leaders who reflect their values and fight for their best interests in the halls of Congress.”
