Trump Lied About Protecting Dreamers, Kristi Noem’s DHS Now Threatening DACA Recipients

Washington, D.C. — Today, responding to recent reporting detailing how the Trump Administration is further intensifying their efforts to undermine the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, including a call from DHS officials for DACA recipients to “self-deport,” Voto Latino issued the following statement: 

“What this administration’s Department of Homeland Security is doing under the failed leadership of Secretary Kristi Noem is reckless and irresponsible, and puts the livelihoods of over 500,000 DACA recipients at risk. The president himself has stated that he wants Dreamers to be protected, yet this statement by DHS is a contradiction. Trump breaking his promises is nothing new. By spreading this narrative about DACA recipients, this administration is going after exemplary members of our communities. Rather than embracing the American success story of Dreamers and DACA recipients, Republicans continue to sow fear, and spread dangerous misinformation.

“The American people know that Dreamers and DACA recipients belong in America. And they have earned the right to call themselves American citizens. We urgently renew our call to lawmakers to work towards a comprehensive solution that values the dignity of all DACA recipients, Dreamers, and their families.”
