Voto Latino Comments on Election of House Speaker Mike Johnson

In response to Representative Mike Johnson winning the role of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Voto Latino Founding President and CEO María Teresa Kumar released the following statement:

“Sadly, in choosing Representative Mike Johnson,  the GOP has made clear their anti-democratic values. As an architect of the 2020 election denial, Johnson fought to overthrow the will of the American voter and sought an attempted coup on our democracy that would have installed the loser of the 2020 presidential election. Johnson peddles in dangerous conspiracies such as the racist ‘replacement’ theory that others millions of citizens. 

“The GOP can no longer claim that MAGA is a fringe of their party. By electing Rep. Johnson, the Republican vote mainstreamed the anti-rights, bigoted extreme that threatens our very institutions. Every American who holds our freedoms dear, should be concerned. We must take them at their word: Democracy and the freedoms we hold dear are on the ballot in 2024.”
