Voto Latino Announces Strong Support for Making Nevada the First in the Nation Contest in Future Presidential Primaries
Washington – Today, Voto Latino, the nation’s premier Latino voter registration and advocacy organization, announced its formal support for the diverse battleground state of Nevada to hold the first primary contest in the presidential nominating calendar for the Democratic Party. The Rules & Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee is scheduled to decide on a new early states window in early December.
“As Democrats control the United States Senate for the next two years, it’s clear that we have Latino voters to thank for this outcome – particularly Latinos in Nevada who re-elected Catherine Cortez Masto as the only Latina in the Senate and delivered the 50th seat for the majority,” said Voto Latino President and CEO María Teresa Kumar. “By shaking up the primary calendar to finally put a diverse battleground state first, Democrats can demonstrate that they understand how important Latino voices and other communities are to the future of our party. If we want to continue building and growing the winning coalition that put a Democrat in the White House and maintained our majority in the Senate, making Nevada first in the nation is a critical step that we can take right now.”
Voto Latino President and CEO María Teresa Kumar previously released an op-ed this summer on why Democrats should look to the future by selecting Nevada as the first presidential primary state.
