Voto Latino Applauds Bipartisan Electoral Count Act Reform: ‘An Important First Step’

In response to the announcement of a bipartisan deal to overhaul the Electoral Count Act, which President Trump attempted to use to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Voto Latino president and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“When Donald Trump attempted to twist the Electoral Count Act to reject the results of the 2020 election, he clearly didn’t care what the law said. But his behavior made clear that an irresponsible demagogue had room to attack the most essential premise of our democracy: that voters hold ultimate power in our government. Reforming the Electoral Count Act will make it harder for reckless politicians to stage a similar assault on our democracy in the future.

“Ultimately, though, no law eliminates the threat of violence that’s renewed every time Trump and his supporters reiterate their support for the Big Lie. Fixing the Electoral Count Act is important, but it doesn’t absolve Republicans of their responsibility to stop parroting President Trump’s lies for short-term political gain. Every politician who continues to cast doubt on the results of the 2020 election continues the attack on democracy we saw on January 6, 2021. It’s time to modernize our election system for the twenty-first century to safeguard the vote and the sanctity of the booth. The Electoral Count Act is a strong step towards that.”
