Voto Latino Applauds Texas Democrats’ Actions to Stop Republican Takeover of Congressional Maps

Washington, D.C.Following the news of Texas Democrats’ plan to block quorum in order to stop racially motivated gerrymandering in the Texas House, Voto Latino President and Co-Founder María Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“The power grab by Republicans in Texas would silence the voices of the state’s majority: people of color. They are attempting to steal Latino and Black representation and political power in plain daylight. Instead of fighting for our vote with policy – they are trying to steal our voice with a sharpie. This is anti-democratic tactic is racist and seeks to cheat the system for political gain, and we should all be alarmed.

“Republican lawmakers have demonstrated where their legislative priorities lie, and it does not align with the needs of Texans. Instead of helping families that are still reeling from the recent floods, Texas Republicans have chosen political manipulation.

“We applaud today’s actions by Texas Democrats, who are showing the rest of the nation what it means to stand up to Trump and his Republican enablers. This is a necessary stand against these callous attacks on our multi-cultural democracy.

“This moment will be judged by history, and we will not go down without a fight. Voto Latino remains committed to defending our community against this GOP’s voter suppression machine, whether in the courtroom or at the ballot box.”
