Voto Latino Calls For Trump Impeachment For Inciting Insurrection at US Capitol
Senators Cruz and Hawley must also face repercussions for their role in inciting domestic terror.
Washington, DC – To ensure the safety of the United States and the sanctity of American democracy, Donald Trump must be removed from office for his role in the armed insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. The remaining days until Joe Biden’s inauguration may be some of the most fraught and vulnerable this nation has seen in modern history. The United States has no chief executive. Donald Trump has vacated his ability to govern by his encouragement of domestic terror, resulting in the storming of the Capitol. An assault on the very halls of democracy by the president must lead to his removal from power. Anything less amounts to tacit support of the methods and rhetoric he has displayed. Voto Latino supports the impeachment and conviction of Donald Trump.
Likewise, Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley must be investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee for their role in the insurrection at the Capitol. Their false cries of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election and their attempts to overturn the results of a legally conducted election, speak to their inability to represent the American people in the Senate. Through their lies and objections, Cruz and Hawley provided their explicit support to the insurrectionists. The Senate must look into their behavior and weigh all possible punishments, beginning with censure. In truth, their conduct warrants expulsion from the chamber.
“Some of the most powerful people in government actively provoked an armed siege of the Capitol building, while our representatives were conducting their Constitutional obligation,” said María Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino. “Donald Trump cannot be allowed to terrorize this nation for his remaining time in office. He has been barred from Facebook and Twitter, yet still controls the country’s nuclear arsenal. Congress must act swiftly to remove him from office and neutralize the threat he poses. Those elected officials, especially Cruz and Hawley, who encouraged the Trumpian mob must also be investigated and punished for their crimes against the country. This assault was directed at the very work we do every day at Voto Latino to enfranchise every single American.”
Calls have grown for Vice President Mike Pence and Cabinet members to invoke the 25th amendment against Trump. While Pence has rebuffed those demands, Democrats in the House and Senate are moving forward with the impeachment process. Voto Latino formally asks all duly elected representatives of the American people to uphold their oath to protect the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic. As of Wednesday, that includes the President.
