Voto Latino Calls Student Debt Relief “Critical Step Forward”

Today President Joe Biden announced a student debt relief plan, including forgiveness of up to $20,000 per individual, in addition to a host of other protections. After the announcement Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino, issued the following statement:

“The President’s announcement today is a major step forward for millions of individuals struggling with student debt. It reflects President Biden’s commitment to his campaign promise and the young voters who put him over the top. In doing so, he continues to take unprecedented steps to make a difference in the lives of everyday people. Student loan forgiveness won’t just profoundly change the lives of the individuals struggling to pay off the costs of getting an education. It will help stimulate other sectors in our economy including opening the possibility of home ownership – often the gateway to wealth creation for first generation Americans.

“Today’s announcement doesn’t solve the whole problem of student debt. I look forward to working with our allies to go even further to free hard working individuals and eradicate the root causes of this economic burden. Today’s announcement makes clear that progress is possible when we work together to engage in the political process–and we need to keep fighting.”
