Voto Latino Comments on Republican-Proposed Restrictions to Asylum Access

In response to Republican-proposed threats to the asylum system, Voto Latino Founding President and CEO María Teresa Kumar released the following statement:

“America’s longstanding asylum laws provide essential protection for vulnerable families and individuals. It is irresponsible and wrong for Congress to consider changing these policies as if they were political currency to trade. Harmful changes to these laws must not be added to the supplemental appropriations package.

“Our polling shows that Latinos across the country overwhelmingly support a balanced approach to immigration, including legal pathways for migrants. That is in stark contrast to the enforcement-only proposals from Republican senators in the ongoing negotiations. We cannot allow them to force through extremist changes: Members of Congress must oppose these threats to the asylum system.”
