Voto Latino Congratulates Mikie Sherrill on Her Victory in New Jersey’s Gubernatorial Race
Washington, D.C. — Today, Mikie Sherrill made history as she was elected as New Jersey’s first Democratic female governor. Her victory marks a defining moment for New Jersey that reflects the collective power of voters who believe in opportunity for all.
In response to Governor-elect Sherill’s win, Voto Latino issued the following statement:
“Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill’s victory tonight shows what happens when a multicultural democracy is at work. Voters from diverse backgrounds came together to demand leadership that reflects their values and aspirations. New Jersey made history, and in doing so, showed the nation what progress looks like.
Governor-elect Sherrill has built her career on service. From her time in the Navy to her work in Congress, she has always put people first and delivered results for working families. As governor, she will continue that commitment by working to expand access to affordable health care, defend reproductive health care, and prioritizing working families across the state of New Jersey.
Latinos, who make up nearly 20% of New Jersey’s population, played a pivotal role in this historic outcome. Their voices, along with those of young voters and communities of color, helped shape a vision of a state that welcomes everyone and leaves no one behind.
Voters sent a clear message tonight: the country is heading in the wrong direction under President Trump and Republican leadership. Let this be a lesson — when our needs are ignored, our cities militarized, and our civil liberties violated, we will not stand by. We will vote for those who truly have our best interests at heart. As we look ahead to the midterms, we urge Democrats to build on tonight’s victories, invest early in our communities, and earn the trust of voters through action, not just promises.”
At Voto Latino, we are energized by tonight’s outcome and ready to move forward. We will work hand-in-hand with Governor-elect Sherrill and her team to turn this moment into lasting change.
