Voto Latino Congratulates Zohran Mamdani on His Historic Election as New York City Mayor

Washington, D.C. — Today, Voto Latino congratulates Zohran Mamdani on his historic victory in becoming New York City’s first Indian and Muslim American mayor. This is a win that reflects the power of engaged voters and the promise of inclusive leadership. 

In response, Voto Latino President issued the following statement: 

“Zohran Mamdani’s victory represents what happens when young and diverse voters come together for change. Mayor-elect Mamdani represents the best of what our American democracy can deliver—leadership rooted in community. His election is a powerful statement that New Yorkers want a city government that listens, understands, and delivers for the people.

What we’re seeing in New York City is a generational turning point. Mamdani’s campaign has tapped into hopes of younger, more diverse voters who are demanding bold, authentic leadership that speaks to their everyday lives. He built a movement by talking about what really matters: the cost of rent, access to transit, and the struggle to make ends meet in one of the most expensive cities in the world. His success shows that when you meet young voters where they are, they show up. 

In a city where Latinos make up 29.1% of the population, this kind of inclusive and community-centered vision resonates deeply. Mamdani’s victory is a testament to the power of Latino, immigrant, and young voters who are redefining what progress looks like in America’s largest city.

Voters sent a clear message tonight: the country is heading in the wrong direction under President Trump and Republican leadership. Let this be a lesson — when our needs are ignored, our cities militarized, and our civil liberties violated, we will not stand by. We will vote for those who truly have our best interests at heart. As we look ahead to the midterms, we urge Democrats to build on tonight’s victories, invest early in our communities, and earn the trust of voters through action, not just promises.”
