Voto Latino Defeats Trump-Backed Attack on Arizona Voting Rights
Washington, D.C — In a major blow to the Trump administration’s efforts to overhaul the state election system, Voto Latino is celebrating a decisive legal victory after the Arizona Court of Appeals rejected a sweeping lawsuit brought by the America First Legal Foundation, an organization founded by Trump adviser Stephen Miller. This ruling represents the latest in a series of failed attempts by right-wing groups to dismantle election administration in this critical battleground state. In response to the victory, Beatriz Lopez, Executive Director of Voto Latino, issued the following statement:
“This victory belongs to the voters, and it is a proud moment for Voto Latino as we successfully beat back this latest attempt to silence our community. As an intervening defendant in this case, we stood directly in the gap to defeat this dangerous agenda and ensure the court understood the real-world harm these changes would inflict on our community. By successfully blocking this suit, we have ensured that existing election systems remain firmly in place.
The lawsuit brought by Stephen Miller’s group was a transparent attempt to disenfranchise voters of color by forcing a radical overhaul of our election infrastructure. By attacking drop boxes, signature curing, and established verification practices, these plaintiffs sought to manufacture administrative chaos and erect barriers designed to silence the voices of Arizonans.
This litigation is a direct symptom of the current administration’s broader assault on the ballot box. Since Trump took office, we have seen a transition from campaign rhetoric to a systemic effort to dismantle the Voting Rights Act and weaponize law enforcement for voter intimidation. By targeting the tools that Latino, Black and other disenfranchised communities rely on to vote, this administration is attempting to curate a favorable electorate rather than honoring the will of the people. One year into this term, the message is clear: they aren’t just changing the rules; they are trying to choose their own voters. Voto Latino will continue to stand as a shield against these undemocratic tactics.”
