Voto Latino: Ending Dual Citizenship Is an Attack on American Multiculturalism
Washington, D.C. — Today, Voto Latino strongly condemns the introduction of the Republican Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, a bill sponsored by Senator Bernie Moreno. This bill would bar Americans from holding dual citizenship, in turn forcing millions of people to choose between their legal rights and their identities.
The United States allows dual citizenship under current law, allowing for U.S. citizens to hold more than one nationality. The Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025 would tear at the very fiber of our country—a nation built by immigrants. This legislation would force Americans to choose between their citizenship and their culture, their families, and in many cases, their homes.
In response to the introduction of this legislation, Voto Latino issued the following statement:
“This bill is a direct attack on the multiculturalism that defines our country. The Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025 can potentially target millions of Americans whose identities are rooted in their rich backgrounds. Instead of celebrating the diversity of our country, this bill seeks to restrict who is allowed to call themselves American.
We need to make it clear that this bill is not just about ‘exclusive allegiance.’ It is about further sowing division, and weaponizing patriotism. By forcing dual citizens to ‘choose a side,’ the bill risks severing cultural and familial bonds that are central to American identity. Under the current administration, we have seen how Republican lawmakers have been emboldened to lead a narrative of who does and does not belong in this country.
The reality is that countless dual-national Americans contribute to our nation by leading in public office, serving in our military, and overall enriching our communities. Their connection to more than one country does not diminish their commitment to the United States.
Voto Latino calls on Congress to reject this extreme legislation, and instead focus on bipartisan solutions that strengthen inclusivity, and uphold the constitutional rights of all Americans—regardless of their background.”
