Voto Latino Honors Historic Tenure of Congressman Steny Hoyer Upon Announcement of His Retirement

Washington, D.C – In response to Congressman Steny Hoyer’s announcement that he will not seek re-election after more than four decades of service, Voto Latino issued the following statement:

“For over forty years, Congressman Hoyer has been a dedicated ally of the Latino community. Whether championing the Freedom to Vote Act, voting to pass the National Museum of the American Latino Act, and being a steadfast supporter of citizenship for Dreamers, his leadership has been a cornerstone of our democracy.

Congressman Hoyer’s legislative legacy is historic. From authoring the Americans with Disabilities Act to his work on the Help America Vote Act following the 2000 election, he has consistently fought to expand access and equity for all Americans. Beyond policy he served as a vital stabilizing force in the House.

His decision to retire is an honorable one. His impact is particularly felt in Maryland, where the Latino population has grown significantly during his tenure, now making up roughly 12% of the state’s population. Congressman Hoyer did not just witness this growth; he championed the needs of this evolving electorate. Having served in critical leadership roles as House Majority Leader and Minority Whip, he was a steadfast collaborator with Voto Latino and a partner to Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi in passing some of the most consequential legislation of the 21st century.

Voto Latino deeply admires Congressman Hoyer’s unwavering commitment to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow and building a more inclusive democracy. His historic accomplishments and impact will be felt for decades to come, and we are profoundly grateful for his extraordinary service.”
