Voto Latino Releases Second PSA Featuring La Borinqueña in Partnership with Fair Fight
Washington, DC – La Borinqueña, the afro-Latinx superhero created by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, returns in a new PSA to encourage Georgians to vote early in the Senate runoff elections occurring on January 5, 2021. Voter registration for the contests ended on Monday, December 7. Voto Latino co-founder and actor Rosario Dawson returns to voice the English-language version of the PSA, while actor, activist, and Voto Latino Impact Council Chair Zoe Saldana voices the Spanish version. Voto Latino and Fair Fight Action, founded by Stacey Abrams, have partnered with La Borinqueña to emphasize the importance of the runoff elections and encourage Latinx and communities of color to exercise their right to vote.
“We have one month to educate, engage and empower Georgians of color to vote in these Senate runoffs,” said María Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino. “Along with Fair Fight, and with help from La Borinqueña, Voto Latino is mobilizing a statewide get-out-the-vote campaign to ensure that Latinxs and other voters of color have the resources and information they’ll need to make informed decisions at the polls. La Borinqueña is a role model for Latinx people everywhere and will lead our community to a critical mass of engagement in January.”
For the January 5th runoff elections, Voto Latino has registered more than 12,000 voters in Georgia. The organization previously registered 35,787 Georgians for the 2020 general election cycle. In the general election, 64% of those registered by Voto Latino were between the ages of 18 and 39 and 57% were women.
The PSAs are being distributed across social media to potential voters, highlighting the significance of the two runoff elections and the importance of voting early, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The second of the three PSAs can be viewed here. The first can be seen here.
