Voto Latino Responds to Draft Border Legislation
In response to the draft border legislation just unveiled by U.S. Senate negotiators, Voto Latino Founding President and CEO María Teresa Kumar released the following statement:
“Immigration reform is an incredibly complex issue, but the Senate’s draft bill misses the mark by ignoring the most important part of the debate, which is establishing a common sense eventual pathway to citizenship for the millions of essential workers who have lived in America for years, pay their taxes, and contribute to the backbone of our economy.
“Perhaps if the bill’s negotiations had included representation of Latino senators, this critical issue would have been addressed. And it’s important for all sides to understand how closely Latinos are watching these negotiations. Nearly 16 million eligible American voters have a loved one who is an essential worker, so there is a lot of political will across the country to ensure they are protected.”
