Voto Latino Responds to FCC Move to Criminalize AI Robocalls

In response to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) moving to criminalize unsolicited robocalls using artificial intelligence-created voices, Voto Latino Founding President and CEO María Teresa Kumar released the following statement:

“We applaud the FCC’s proposal to explicitly outlaw almost all robocalls deploying AI-created voices. Their potential use can distort information, take away our agency to exercise our vote, and jeopardize our freedoms.

“As the recent example in New Hampshire has demonstrated, AI robocalls are a current and present risk, and they can be used to influence voters in a range of ways – including cloning a trusted voice to deliver incorrect information about how and when to cast a ballot. Our elections are too critical and our democracy too important to allow bad actors to run rampant with powerful tools for mass disinformation.”
