Voto Latino: Supreme Court Upholds Birthright Citizenship, Reaffirms Constitutional Promise for All

Washington, D.C. — In response to today’s Supreme Court ruling in Trump v. Barbara, a landmark victory for birthright citizenship and the 14th Amendment, Voto Latino President Maria Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“Today, the Supreme Court defended the soul of this country and the very definition of what it means to be an American. By reaffirming that every child born on American soil is a citizen, the Court chose to embrace our multiracial and multicultural reality, rather than succumb to a political agenda rooted in the fear of it. 

The inescapable truth that has alarmed the architects of this administration’s executive order is that their vision of America is completely out of touch with reality. We are already a multicultural, majority-minority nation, driven by a diverse generation that is rewriting the future of American democracy in real time. By striking down this executive order, the Court drew a permanent line in the sand—defeating a radical attempt to divide our families and strip away any doubt that our community belongs here.”

This decision safeguards the integrity of American democracy and ensures stability for millions of families, including: 

    • Our Families in the Workforce: Children of long-term residents, including those on H-1B, F-1, and L-1 visas, can continue to grow and contribute fully as Americans without fear of exclusion or uncertainty.
  • Mixed-Status Families: This ruling preserves unity within households, ensuring that siblings and family members are not divided by shifting legal definitions of citizenship.
  • The Children of DACA & TPS Holders: Dreamers and TPS holders can rest assured that their children will continue to be recognized as full members of the only country they have ever known.
  • Millions of Our Neighbors Protected: The decision affirms the citizenship of millions born in the United States born to unauthorized parents, who are mostly all Latino, preventing a potential humanitarian crisis and strengthening the social fabric of our communities.

“A multiracial, multicultural America is our superpower, and the Latino community is fueling the engine of that power. Our families have long contributed to and renewed this nation through hard work, faith, and innovation for generations. And yet, even as we contribute to every corner of this country, our communities continue to be targeted, demonized, and told we do not belong. Today’s ruling reaffirms that no executive order, no political agenda, and no climate of fear can override a constitutional promise in the 14th Amendment—one that was fought for, won, and has been the law of the land for over 150 years,” Voto Latino President Maria Teresa Kumar continued. 

“As our nation commemorates 250 years of democracy, this victory carries profound weight. This country was not built by one kind of person. It was built on the backs of enslaved people and immigrants who sacrificed everything—some by force, some by choice—for a promise that their children would have a better life and a rightful place in this nation. This ruling is not just a win for today. It is the foundational bedrock for generations to come.”
