Voto Latino Teams Up With Fair Fight and La Borinqueña with Eyes On Georgia Senate Races

Voto Latino Continues Its Voter Registration and GOTV Efforts; Co-Founder Rosario Dawson and Voto Latino Impact Council Chair Zoe Saldana lend their voices to the effort.

Washington, DC – Voto Latino and Fair Fight Action have partnered with La Borinqueña to register and turn out voters in Georgia ahead of the state’s two Senate runoff elections on January 5, 2021. The deadline to register for the runoff elections is December 7, 2020. With support from Fair Fight Action, founded by Stacey Abrams, Voto Latino co-founder and actor Rosario Dawson will voice La Borinqueña, hero of the graphic novel series by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, in three PSAs encouraging voter registration in Georgia and provide important election information to Georgia’s voters. Zoe Saldana, actor, activist, and Voto Latino Impact Council Co-Chair, will voice La Borinqueña in the Spanish language version of the PSA. Dawson currently stars as Ahsoka Tano on The Mandalorian, while Saldana has portrayed the Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Voto Latino is proud to partner with Stacey, Fair Fight, and La Boriqueña for the Georgia run-off. Just as the Latino vote and Asian-American vote played a critical role in flipping Virginia, so are these communities critical to working in coalition with progressive Georgians voters to deliver the Senate,” said María Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino. “If 2020 showed us what Voto Latino has known since our inception, Latinos are not a monolith. We have been working in the great state of Georgia now for our third election, having already registered over 36,000 Georgians since January 2020. We’re excited to continue enfranchising more new voters to make a statement.”

“Latino voters were critical to the multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-generational coalition that made history by flipping Georgia in November,” said Fair Fight Founder, Stacey Abrams. “With an opportunity to flip two Senate seats on January 5, we are pleased to be joining forces once again with Voto Latino and excited to welcome La Borinqueña to the team. The issues that are vital to the survival of our communities are on the ballot in January, and we look forward to a new generation of Georgians making their voices heard at the polls on January 5.”

“I created La Borinqueña to not only be a superhero featured in her own independently published graphic novel series but to be a symbol for social justice in the real world via our philanthropy and activism,” said Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, creator of La Borinqueña. Therefore, it is an honor for us to have our Afro-Latinx character take a stand for voting rights and exclaim ¡Georgia con ganas! in these runoff elections.”

Voto Latino registered 35,787 voters in Georgia for the 2020 election cycle. 64% of those registered were between the ages of 18 and 39 and 57% were women. The organization expects to register 12,000 to 15,000 voters ahead of the December 7th deadline, with an initial investment of up to $2 million. GOTV messaging will be aimed towards 115,000 voters in the state.

The PSAs will be distributed across social media to potential voters, highlighting the importance of the two runoff elections and the need to register to vote by December 7. The first of the three PSAs can be seen here.
