Voto Latino: Texas Republicans Advance Mid-Decade Gerrymander to Silence Voters of Color

Washington, D.C. — Today, in response to the Texas House of Representatives’ approval of a Republican-led mid-decade congressional redistricting plan, Voto Latino issued the following statement:

“Texas Republican leaders have once again shown their willingness to cheat and manipulate the system to protect their own power. By rewriting maps mid-decade, they are deliberately silencing communities of color and dismantling fair representation for millions of Texans.

This is not governing — this is disenfranchisement. The decision to gerrymander congressional maps in the middle of a decade is an unprecedented attack on the constitutional rights of Texans, particularly Latino and Black voters whose voices are already too often marginalized. It undermines how resources are distributed, from schools and hospitals to roads and public safety, and ensures that communities of color are left behind.

Let’s be clear: this is a direct assault on our democracy. When politicians rig the rules to pick their voters instead of voters picking their representatives, everyone loses.

We call on federal courts, the Department of Justice, and all defenders of democracy to step in and stop this blatant violation of voting rights. This fight in Texas is not just about one state — it sets a dangerous precedent for the nation. If left unchecked, these tactics will spread, further eroding the foundation of our democracy.”
