Voto Latino Welcomes January 6th Committee Referrals, Urges Swift Prosecutions
Today, in response to votes by the January 6th Committee to refer Donald Trump and several of his associates for criminal prosecution, María Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino, released the following statement:
“The January 6th Committee has steadfastly held its course to get to the bottom of what exactly happened before, during, and after the attacks of January 6th. The Committee’s probe is essential in making sure that our democratic institutions are never again subject to the threat of armed insurrectionists determined to overthrow an election. However, this should not be the end of the story. The next step is even more critical – holding the individuals who orchestrated the day’s events accountable.
“Referring Donald Trump to the Department of Justice is the right call. I urge the special counsel and prosecutors to move the criminal cases forward with renewed urgency. It now falls to the Department of Justice to continue its criminal investigation and pursue justice and accountability.
“In 2018, in 2020 and again in 2022, Americans showed up at the polls to fight back against the extremism, bigotry, and lawlessness of the Trump Administration and the MAGA movement. American democracy must be defended from all attempts to undermine it.”
