Voto Latino Welcomes the 118th Congress, Urges Action
Today, Voto Latino welcomed the convening of the 118th Congress and pledged to support Senators and Members of Congress, new and returning, in their efforts to expand opportunity and protect democracy. María Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino, released the following statement:
“Members of Congress are coming to Washington with a long list of pressing problems that demand urgent attention. Latino voters helped elect candidates who spoke out to defend democracy, codify Roe, protect Dreamers and take meaningful steps to end gun violence. This Congress has the power to bring fairness to our immigration system, protect our elections, and defend the fundamental rights of all Americans. Voto Latino will support its efforts to expand opportunity and strengthen our democracy.
“In particular, we want to congratulate Representatives Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar, who represent a new generation of leadership in the Democratic Party. Congressman Aguilar’s election as Chair of the House Democratic Caucus makes him the highest ranking Latino in the history of the chamber–and sends a clear signal that Latinos can and should be participating at the very highest levels of our government. As we continue to advocate for the Latino community, we look forward to working closely with this team, along with Senator Schumer and other leaders in the Senate.”
