Voto Latino Urges Congress To Pass Build Back Better Bill Immediately, Bill Modernizes Broken Immigration System And Levels Up Millions of Struggling Americans
WASHINGTON – As Democrats move to consider the Build Back Better reconciliation package, Voto Latino President and CEO María Teresa Kumar, issued the following statement:
“We strongly urge Congress to vote to pass the Build Back Better Act immediately as an important step toward providing lasting protections for immigrant communities. The bill currently includes deportation protections and work permits for immigrants, allowing an estimated 7 million people to receive 5-year work permits. Our true North Star is providing a pathway to citizenship; these protections are critically needed now to strengthen our economy and make overdue progress on modernizing our broken immigration system.”
“This is the year to deliver lasting protections for immigrants who stepped up to support our country throughout the pandemic and kept our economy afloat. These protections are critical for the country’s economic recovery and our efforts to rebuild our communities’ infrastructure.
“It is time for Democrats to deliver on this campaign promise, and the millions of Americans that elected them to Congress will be watching to ensure they swiftly send it to the President’s desk. Delivering on an immigration permit program that will protect millions of families from deportation and ensure that immigrant workers can continue to aid America’s recovery is a no-brainer. Anything short of these improvements to our broken immigration system will be unacceptable.”
