Voto Latino Joins Fight to Challenge New Arizona “Proof of Citizenship” Voting Law
GOP law seeks to keep thousands of eligible voters from voting
Washington – Voto Latino today announced it is joining a legal challenge to stop Arizona’s new voting law requiring proof of citizenship to vote signed by Governor Doug Doucey last week. The legislation would create an unnecessary hurdle for eligible voters to register and jeopardizes the rights of thousands of already registered voters under the National Voting Rights Act. Voto Latino President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar released the following statement:
“Arizona’s new proof of citizenship voting law is Republicans’ latest ploy to keep thousands of eligible voters–especially older people and people of color–away from the ballot box. If this law is allowed to stand, Arizona voters will face an unnecessary, politically motivated hurdle just to register and exercise their essential right to vote, and thousands of already registered voters may end up purged from voting rolls. We can’t allow H.B. 2492 to be implemented, this is why we’re asking the Secretary to fix the law.
“Study after study has shown that the threat of voter fraud is essentially non-existent, but the threat posed by legislation like this is very real and profoundly destructive. Arizona voters transformed the local and national political landscape in the 2020 election and their vote will determine the outcome of the 2022 elections. ”
