Gun Reform Legislation is Just One Step, but an Important One

Today a bipartisan group of Senators announced an agreement that will allow Congress to enact gun reform legislation. In response to the announcement, Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino, issued the following statement:

“Today’s announcement is an important step towards keeping people safe from the kinds of horrific violence we recently saw in Uvalde, Buffalo, and Tulsa. I applaud Senator Murphy for his leadership on this issue and the immense effort he put into hammering out a deal. This legislation will help keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them, and it will undoubtedly save lives.

“Democracy requires compromise and change takes time. However, over eleven massacres occurred last weekend alone while Uvalde buried their dead. We can celebrate this win while recognizing that we need more leadership from Republicans to continue curbing gun violence.”
