Voto Latino Announces Win in Suit to Protect AZ Drop Boxes

Yesterday, in a lawsuit filed by League of Women Voters of Arizona, a federal judge ruled and issued a temporary restraining order that prevents Clean Elections USA and its supporters from engaging in certain drop box monitoring activities in Arizona. The relief entered by the court addresses many of the concerns brought forth by Voto Latino and Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans in a lawsuit filed against Clean Elections USA on Monday, October 24th.

Voto Latino today announced that it had reached an agreement with Clean Elections USA that would protect voters attempting to use dropboxes in Arizona. Clean Elections USA agreed that it would not seek to appeal the ruling issued against it yesterday in the case filed by League of Women Voters of Arizona; as a result Voto Latino will not seek an emergency injunction in its own litigation.

In response, Voto Latino President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“This is a huge win for voting rights in general and Arizona voters in particular. No one should be subject to threats or harassment for choosing to exercise their constitutionally protected right to vote; and when vigilantes are activated by baseless claims of illegal voting, we know that it’s people of color who are forced to pay the price.

“This is a critical election for Arizona and for our country. Voters can and should have full confidence that they can participate safely on or before Election Day. Now it’s up to us to vote and reject the kinds of irresponsible, bigoted leadership that has stoked the flames of groups like Clean Elections USA.”
