Voto Latino Applauds Democrats’ New Primary Schedule
Washington, D.C. — Voto Latino commended the Democratic Party for adopting a new presidential primary schedule that allows the voices of core Democratic constituencies a greater say in the nomination process. The Biden administration’s proposal, which was adopted by the Democratic Party’s Rules and Bylaws Committee on December 2nd makes South Carolina the first primary state, with an election scheduled for February 3, 2024. Nevada and New Hampshire would follow on February 6. Georgians would vote next on February 13, then Michiganders on February 27.
“The new primary schedule is a step toward making the Democratic Party more attuned to the preferences of its most reliable and growing supporters,” said Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino. “The Democratic Party relies on the votes of Latinos and people of color to win. Just last month, we saw Latinos show up in unprecedented numbers to literally save democracy. It is only fitting that these stalwart supporters of the party be given a greater say in the selection of the party’s nominee.”
“Investing in a rising generation of voters is not only the right thing to do, it’s the strategic move to make,” Kumar continued. “A primary calendar that better incorporates the views of America’s increasingly diverse citizens will lead to the selection of stronger candidates and more Election Day victories.”
