Voto Latino Applauds Adoption of New Democratic Primary Calendar
Washington, D.C. — Voto Latino today applauded the Democratic National Committee for approving a new presidential primary schedule that allows the voices of core Democratic constituencies a greater say in the nomination process. The new calendar, which was proposed last year by President Biden, makes South Carolina the first primary state, followed by Nevada and New Hampshire, Georgia, and Michigan.
For far too long the Democratic nomination process has failed to reflect its voters — pushing the voices of minority communities to later in the process. This new calendar will help ensure that voters of color will have a voice earlier in the process and throughout. Latinos were central to President Biden’s 2020 campaign, flipping states like Arizona which voted for a Democratic candidate for President for the first time in 24 years. In 2022, Latinos supported Democratic candidates for Senate by a seven to three margin. And Latinos will be a critical part of any winning strategy in 2024.
