Voto Latino Responds to Nikki Haley’s Announcement for Presidential Candidacy
In response to Trump’s former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, announced her candidacy for President, María Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino, issued the following statement:
“Nikki Haley can’t have it both ways: she wants credit for separating herself from Donald Trump while still pandering to the most extreme elements of his MAGA base. Don’t be fooled. At the end of the day, she can still be counted on to support the dangerous, reactionary agenda of Donald Trump and his enablers. Her record makes clear she would be a disaster for Latinos, working families, and anyone who cares about our most essential American values.
“During her time as the governor of South Carolina, Haley worked unwaveringly to limit abortion rights by signing a ban on abortions past 19 weeks, with no exceptions for rape or incest; and, declared that she ‘will not expand Medicaid. Ever.’ She also signed into law a discriminatory and regressive Arizona-style immigration measure that allowed police officers to require the immigration papers of anyone that is stopped and suspected of being in the country without documentation.
“Nikki Haley may be one of the first people to throw her hat into the ring to challenge former President Donald Trump for the nomination, but it’s clear that as the nominee she’d lead the Republican Party in the same extremist direction.”
