Voto Latino Supports Proposal to Move San Antonio Municipal Elections to November

Washington, D.C. — Today Voto Latino announced its support for  Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones’ initiative to move San Antonio’s municipal elections from May to November. This shift would expand access to the ballot box and increase meaningful participation in this majority-Latino city. For the proposal to take effect in time, the San Antonio City Council must vote on the measure by the end of December.

Voto Latino issued the following statement:

“As the seventh largest city in the nation and where nearly two-thirds of residents are Latino, moving municipal elections from May to November isn’t just good policy—it’s a step towards good governance. San Antonio is one of the last major cities in Texas that is still holding municipal elections in May. In a majority-Latino city with a diverse electorate, every community should have an electoral system that truly reflects and uplifts their voices. November elections have shown consistently that they draw higher participation, giving working families, young voters, and communities of color a chance to exercise their right to vote.

San Antonio deserves an electoral system that reflects the full strength of its people. Leaving its antiquated ways of doing things in the past and shifting municipal elections to November will help ensure that our democracy works for everyone, not just a select few.”
