Inflation Reduction Act Is an Essential Investment, but Must Not Be Used to Attack Immigrants

This weekend the U.S. Senate is moving forward with negotiations over the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, a package of legislation that contains critical provisions to reduce climate change, invest in clean energy, and improve health care programs for all Americans.

As the negotiations continue, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and other lawmakers have made it clear that Republican amendments focused on attacking immigrants are unacceptable and must not be included in the final package.

In response to the news, Voto Latino president and CEO María Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“The Senate must hold firm in opposing Republican-backed amendments to the Inflation Reduction Act that would hurt immigrants and their families through policies of state-sponsored discrimination,” said María Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino. “This package of legislation contains transformational investments to protect our planet’s future and strengthen our nation’s health care system for everyone. Republicans are brazenly trying to insert a poison pill that sets our country back and demonizes immigrants at a time our country is healing, and their extremist tactics cannot stand. The Senate must stop the Republicans’ underhanded maneuvering and pass the Inflation Reduction Act without delay.”
