Voto Latino Applauds San Antonio City Council Vote to Move Municipal Elections to November
Washington, D.C. — Today, Voto Latino applauds the San Antonio City Council’s vote to move municipal elections from May to November in odd-numbered years. This decision will expand voter participation in one of the nation’s largest cities. Aligning municipal elections with November voting dates helps reduce barriers and ensures that more voters are able to engage in local elections.
In response, Voto Latino issued the following statement:
“Moving San Antonio’s municipal elections to November during odd-numbered years is not only a win for Latino voters but for democracy as a whole. In a majority-Latino city, elections should be held when working families, young people, and communities of color are most able to participate. November is when voters across the state of Texas are already most engaged, and this change will ensure that San Antonio’s leadership truly reflects the full community it serves.
We applaud the leadership of Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, who took the initiative to seize this opportunity, ensuring that more San Antonians have a real say in how their city is governed. Voto Latino is proud to have supported this effort alongside community partners and local advocates, and we applaud the council members who voted in favor of greater access to the ballot box for one of the nation’s largest Latino cities.”
