WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Voto Latino, the leading civic engagement organization focused on educating and empowering a new generation of Latino voters, celebrated the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. In commemoration of the annual observance, Voto Latino Co-Founder and President María Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“As we are every year, we are proud to celebrate the history, culture, contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. But this is a crucial year more than ever for our community,” said Voto Latino Co-Founder and President María Teresa Kumar. “For generations, Latinos have played a pivotal role in our country’s prosperity; Latino contributions are an integral part of what makes America the exceptional and successful country it is today.

“This year, it is pressing that we go beyond just highlighting our contributions for one month. What we need to do is invest like never before in making sure the voices of our community are heard – we must show up stronger than ever at the ballot box.

“That’s where real power comes from: our voices and the ability to make change happen. And that is why we are being inundated by voter suppression tactics from those that don’t want us to exercise the political power that is our fair and equal right: anti-voter laws, coercion, and disinformation are all squarely targeting our community. That’s why Voto Latino is more committed than ever to inform our community, and to register and mobilize Latinos.

“This Hispanic Heritage Month, we will all celebrate the achievements of our community. And in this election, we will fight to realize our voting power and elect leaders who represent and reflect our values who once elected we will hold to account.”
