Voto Latino Comments on Unconstitutional Proposal to Dismantle Birthright Citizenship
In response to legislation introduced by Rep. Matt Gaetz that seeks to end birthright citizenship, Voto Latino Founding President and CEO María Teresa Kumar released the following statement:
“The proposed ‘End Birthright Citizenship Fraud Act’ is an attack on the Constitution. Rep. Gaetz’s bill is an unconcealed act of hatred, further marginalizing vulnerable communities, and raising the likelihood of violence against Latinos throughout the country.
“The Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution is clear on what it takes to become a U.S. citizen, and no amount of xenophobia or racism can erase that fact.
“Anyone who supports American democracy and cares for the safety and security of American communities must vocally oppose Rep. Gaetz’s bill and any other calls to dismantle constitutional rights to citizenship.”
